North Union United Soccer Club Guiding Principles
Young players need to learn from natural soccer environments provided by regular and significant periods of uninterrupted play during training and matches. We must seek to capture the spirit of free play in organized training sessions. We cannot attempt to satisfy that challenge by planning activities based on the following assumptions:
What the coach teaches is rarely what the player learns.
Learning is a very individual process.
Competition increases motivation, and motivation increases the potential for learning.
Some young players are naturally creative; most can learn to make better decisions and become more skillful.
Some young players have natural touch; most can be competent through training and practice.
All players make mistakes, and mistakes are necessary for learning.
It takes a very long time to be good at anything.
Sharing the ball is not natural for young players, but by about ten, some passing is likely.
Low-key competition during technical development can still be fun!
Teaching technique develops technicians; teaching skill develops invention.
